The Art of Impact
Hands in collective motion. Remembrances in digital limbo. A confrontation in a crowd. This year, the art of impact is the art of together. A curated selection of visual art, interventions, participatory pieces and more, the Art Track brings us together around elusive and empotional aspects of social impact. Let your senses teach you what no workshop can.
Site-specific intervention OBLIO/HANDSMuna Mussie |
Muna Mussie, in collaboration with the Association of Sub-Saharan African Women and II Generation, presents the site-specific intervention OBLIO/HANDS. In the title, the Italian term oblio means oblivion or forgetfulness. On a wall made of semi-transparent fabric, a group of performers makes slowly visible the other word of the title, HANDS, hour after hour, through a persistent action of stitching. The second word, chosen by the group together with the artist specifically for the Impact Week, appears in order to remind us of its potential constructive power, when hands reach out and give, when they exchange ethically, grasp each other, become a universal sign of peace. |
Dance performance PlutoneElisabetta Consonni |
Plutone (Pluto in Italian) is a choreographic composition that looks at the fragile balance of cooperation. The interaction between the bodies of three dancers generates a hypnotic landscape, a series of concentric evolutions punctuated by actual and potential encounters, attractive and repulsive tensions. The choreographic landscape they create is a system of precise counterweights and distances: the bodies in motion are in fact both gravitational centres and satellites, linked to each other by a dual and dialectical dependence. No force prevails or imposes itself on the other otherwise a physical clash or a breakdown in their harmony might take place. |
Performance, video You Have No IdeaSelma Selman |
In this performance piece, artist and activist Selma Selman walked through Black Lives Matter Plaza and through a crowd of fascists screaming “You Have No Idea.” “This performance,” according to the artist, “shared on social media, articulated the lack of collective reason which also paradoxically created a ground for rational discourse.” The origin of Selma Selman is Romani; her work often refers explicitly to her biography, but in this specific performance she chooses not to. Her claim becomes universal. |
Video MUM, I’M SORRYMartina Melilli |
MUM I’M SORRY is a film born of dialogues: with refugees who survived the long journey to escape their countries of origin; and with Dr. Cristina Cattaneo, forensic scientist and anthropologist. The film invites us to observe the objects chosen as essential by those who did not survive the journey, to imagine all the stories belonging to them, and that could have belonged. |
Musical performance Afrodream |
Afrodream performs original compositions that bring together classic sounds of afrobeat and jazz with a touch of pop music – an inclusive and unique mix. The band is based in Torino and was born in 2015 from the meeting of Abou Samb, leader of the group on vocals and percussion; Eddy Gaulein Stef on bass; Ariel Verosto on piano and transverse flute; Luca Vergano on guitar; Jacopo Angeleri on drums; and Simone Arlorio on sax. |
Musical performance Stregoni |
Stregoni is a project initiated in 2016 from the idea of Marco Bernacchia and Gianluca Taraborelli. Their dream-come-true idea has been to play with more than 5,000 migrants in reception centres and the streets first, and many music venues in different countries later. Stregoni makes the meeting between local citizens and associations and migrants happen through music; they organise workshops and concerts based on live improvisation, where everyone can become a musician. As the band and its members is constantly shifting, the version of Stregoni playing at Impact Week is unique to the event. |
Film Il Cielo Stellato (The Starry Sky)Caterina Erica Shanta |
The procession celebrating Madonna della Bruna is a centuries-old celebration increasingly mediated, experienced and documented through images produced by technological devices. Caterina Shanta collaborated with all the people attending the celebration in person, who wanted to share their images with her in order to document and protect the material and immaterial heritage of Madonna della Bruna, through videomaking and photogrammetry. On the occasion of Impact Week, the movie is exclusively available online 1-24 November. WATCH NOW |
Exhibition MetronomeSarah Sze |
Metronome, marks the debut solo exhibition in an Italian institution by American artist Sarah Sze. The installation restores all the complexity of Sze's artistic poetics, developed since the late 1990s, which challenges the static nature of sculpture and mirrors the information explosion defining our contemporary world. Sze reworks the mass of visual narratives we store daily, from magazines, television, smartphones, cyberspace and the tangible world; her practice evokes the generative process of image-making in a world where consumption and production are increasingly interdependent and where, in a continuum, sculpture gives rise to images, and images to sculpture. Presented by OGR Torino |
Exhibition Tainted LoversSara Enrico
|
Tainted Lovers brings together a series of works crafted through a sophisticated manipulation of materials, including fabric, concrete and foam rubber. These works are then arranged in an unprecedented installation within the exhibition space. Sara Enrico's exploration of the surface of objects, structural tensions and the interplay of diverse elements invites visitors to reconsider their perceptual categories, immersing them in an almost tactile sensory experience. Presented by OGR Torino |
Curation Simone Basani |
Simone Basani is a curator, dramaturg and art producer. His practice focuses on participatory strategies and remembrance processes. By developing his personal research approach to such topics in and outside institutions, he aims to challenge the functioning of heteronormative and colonial gaze - especially the European one. |
